WA wins inaugural AFL schoolgirls challenge

Western Australia’s State Schoolgirls took out the inaugural AFL Schoolgirls Interstate Challenge with their three wins from four games in Queensland this week.

After defeating host side Queensland and the highly-rated Victorian team in the opening rounds of the championship, WA was confident or repeating their results when they met both sides again to decide the overall winner.

Despite a narrow two-point loss to Victoria in the re-match, WA defeated Queensland by 22 points yesterday to secure top spot on the championship ladder and take out the inaugural schoolgirls’ title.

Despite flu ripping through the WA team and a late night doctor’s visit before the final game, the WA girls started strongly, taking a one-point lead into the half time break before hitting their straps in the third quarter.

Through good midfield running and teamwork, WA kicked three unanswered goals to go into the final quarter in a commanding position. They added another goal in the last quarter to put the icing on the cake, coming away with a solid win as champions of the inaugural Interstate Schoolgirls carnival.

The win was highlighted by a strong team performance featuring captain Lauren Osborne, who was particularly inspiring in the third quarter, Levi McCulloch, Alex Williams, Philipa Seth and Shanelle Carn.

Western Australia’s opening round win against Victoria was also WA’s first ever female football victory over Victoria.
