WA Women’s State Squad prepares for National Championship

In less than three months time on June 7 in South Australia, the 2011 AFL Women’s National Championship will get underway. Exactly two years earlier, the 2009 competition drew to a close in Perth after a competitive grand final between WA and Victoria at Patersons Stadium.

WA finished the tournament as runners up in what proved to be an emotional week, full of highs and lows. Notable wins against Queensland and ACT along with an inspired grand final performance were offset against a disappointing defeat in the round robin stage to Victoria, and the loss of some players to injury.

WA State Country coaches announced

The WA Country Football League Executive has endorsed two new coaches to lead the WACFL senior State Team and CBH Country Colts for the 2011 and 2012 representative campaigns.

New senior coach Paul Pannell has successfully coached Waroona Football Club in the Peel Football League for the past two seasons, tasting premiership success in both years at the helm.  He also coached the combined Peel Football League side which played in the A-Section Grand Final of the 2010 Landmark Country Championships.

Top Ambassador tosses coin

Gill Godridge, a terrific AFL School Ambassador from Wanneroo Primary School, was recognized and rewarded for her great work promoting AFL at her school by having the honour of Tossing the Coin at the recent AFL Nab Cup Western Derby Game at Patersons Stadium on Sunday, February 13.

Gill is a member of an Ambassador team that now numbers over 1000 teachers who enhance both learning and physical activity through quality AFL Education programs in WA schools.

Gill said she really enjoys her Ambassador role and certainly appreciated the opportunity to be out in the middle with the AFL stars.

Fundraising Carnival at Mundaring Oval

The Hills Football Association will host a round robin carnival on Sunday, April 3, at Mundaring Oval, with all profits from the day going to the Carnarvon Flood Relief Fund.

The games will start at 11am and finish with a final at 4.30pm, followed by refreshments.

HFA Secretary Carleen Pallister encouraged football fans to attend the game and spread the word among family and friends to ensure strong support for the event.

Nyoongar Magic AFL Clinics are kicking off

A Nyoongar Magic AFL Clinic for Aboriginal boys between the ages of 12 and 15 will be held at Des Penman Reserve, Nollamara, over the next three weeks as part of an initiative to engage new players with the game.

The clinics have been organised by the West Australian Football Commission and Subiaco District in conjunction with the City of Stirling, Nyoongar Sports and the WA Police Neighbourhood Policing Team Nollamara.

The clinics begin on Wednesday March 16 from 4.30-5.30pm and run for three Wednesdays, ending on March 30. Former AFL and WAFL players Des Headland Alistair Pickett will also be involved with the program.

Irish AFL Looking for WA Based Players for 2011 International Cup

The Irish AFL www.arfli.com are seeking WA-based players to represent Ireland in the International Cup 2011 which is being held in Sydney and Melbourne later this year.  Players must be Irish citizens and were predominantly resident in Ireland between the ages of 10 and 16.

The concentration of Irish living in WA and the strong link between GAA and AFL provide an opportunity for WA based clubs to offer a unique opportunity to any current or new Irish players at your club.  This also allows you to promote the diversity and talent development of your club and league. Mates Rally Support for Mens Health

On the back of Shane Crawford’s recent run from Adelaide to Melbourne raising money for Breast Cancer, a group of mates from Manjimup are setting about a feat of their own.

The mates have been involved in the coaching of the Lower South West Football League’s, Landmark Country Football Championships team for the past three years. New coach for the 2011 Championships Paul Omodei was looking at a way to inspire the very best players from the League to make themselves available for next year’s team. So now they have turned their attention to also raising funds for charity and helping to promote the message to men in regional areas to be aware of their health.

Chance for schoolgirls to represent State

THE search is on for WA’s most talented schoolgirl football players, with an initial squad being selected next month for the State 16s Schoolgirls AFL National Carnival in Canberra.

Schoolgirls aged 16 years or younger (as at 31-12-11) are eligible for selection in the State side, with initial try-outs being held in April.

Team coach Oliver Beath said the experience would be challenging and rewarding for all involved and encouraged players to head to either Hands Oval in Bunbury on Friday, April 15 or All Saints’ College in Bull Creek on April 16.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our Secondary School girls and I hope they take the chance to be part of this team,” Beath said.

Gerreyn Appointed Coach of West Coast Eagles State Amateur Side

CHRIS Gerreyn has been appointed head coach of the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U/23’s for the next four years replacing Wayne Langbourne who has taken the role of Colts coach at the Perth Football Club.

Chris brings extensive experience to the role having played over 100 WAFL League games, being on the list of Hawthorn and Fremantle and having coaching experience in the WAFL, WAAFL and WA Country Football Leagues.
