Titans and Thunderbirds Claim Victory in Historic Grand Finals

The WAWFL season came to a dramatic conclusion on the weekend with the Coastal Titans stealing a one point victory from a gallant Swan Districts in the dying stages of a brutal encounter.  In a see-sawing affair at EFTel it was Titans veteran Amy Cotterell who calmly slotted a goal with only seconds remaining to give the Coastal Titans their fifth premiership in seven seasons.

Swan Districts went into the match warm favourites after going through the home and away season undefeated but the Titans, who beat Swans in the second semi final two weeks ago, called on all their finals experience to snatch victory with seconds to spare.

A Grade Grand Final

The 2010 WAAFL season comes to an end this Saturday with the A grade grand finals at Medibank Stadium.

The first game of the day, the Phil Scott Colts grand final, sees the minor premiers Fremantle CBC taking on the fifth placed Trinity Aquinas with both teams chasing their first Colts premiership.

Burwood Wins West Perth District RAC Volunteer of the Year

Wanneroo Amateur Football Club President Geoff Burwood has been announced as the West Perth District Football Development Council’s 2010 RAC- West Perth District Volunteer of the Year.

In 2010, 40 nominations were received for volunteers within the West Perth District. The standard of applicants was extremely high and all deserve their nominations.

The 2010 WAWFL Grand Finals take place this Sunday, 5 September, at EFTel Oval, Perth.

Coastal Titans will take on Swan Districts in the Division 1 Grand Final at 2.30pm. Swan Districts finished the year at the top of the ladder with an unbeaten record in the regular season. It was not until they faced the Titans in the Semi-Final of this year's finals series that they suffered their first defeat with the Titans edging a very close game. Swans hit back in the Preliminary Final ousting last year's Premiers, East Fremantle.

WA girls to compete for national honours

The Western Australian Youth Girls team will head to Melbourne on September 6 for the first ever AFL National Youth Girls Carnival.

The team, consisting of 28 players under the age of 18, will compete against South Australia, Queensland, ACT/NSW and Victoria in a bid for national honours.

As part of the promotion of the national carnival the AFL started the “Follow the Flight of the Ball” initiative which saw a pink ball sent to each state to be photographed with famous icons or people, including Julia Gillard.

WA Schools are tops in AFL Quiz!

WA school teams won three out of the four year level competitions in the 2010 National AFL Schools Quiz. Over 1000 teams & 3000 Year 3,4,5 & 6 students from all around Australia competed in the Footy Quiz to win the Money Can’t Buy Experience Major Prize.

The Yr 4 winners were North Kalgoorlie, Nollamara won the Yr 5 competition & Glen Forrest came 1st and 2nd in the yr 6 level. Congratulations and well done to these students and their terrific AFL School Ambassador/teachers Kendall Lange, Anthony Middleton and David Wheatfill who entered the school teams in the competition.

The great Money Can’t Buy Experience included tickets to the Fremantle v Carlton game on Friday 27 August with an on ground interview with Sam Mac from 92.9 prior to the game which was seen on the Big Screen. The students got to meet, & have photos taken with, FFC players, Clayton Hinkley and Brock O’Brien, during half time of the AFL match on Subiaco Oval. They also received a FFC promotional pack and best of all, the lucky students went into the Dockers rooms after the game to see and hear the Fremantle players sing their song after an exciting win.

The AFL Quiz is a FREE, innovative and engaging online competition aimed at developing the literacy and numeracy skills of primary aged children within the theme of Australian Football.

The 2010 AFL Quiz competition was open to students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 and consists of two quizzes of three rounds. Each year level consisted of two pools in which they will compete in.
Quiz 1 will commenced on Monday 3rd May 2010, with Quiz 2 commenced on Monday 7th June 2010. The top 22 teams from each competition were invited to compete in a Finals Series that commenced Monday 2nd August 2010. A maximum of two teams per year level per school were invited into the Final Series.

Teams of three students in the same year level will had one hour of online time to answer 10 questions. Personalised AFL certificates were awarded throughout the competition to those teams in each pool who answered the most questions correctly at the close of each round.
A “Money Can’t Buy Experience” was awarded to the National Final Series Winners in each year level with prizes also being awarded to the 2nd and 3rd placed Finals Series teams.

Teachers were encouraged to enroll teams in this unique national competition to test their students' Australian Football knowledge whilst developing their literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
