Swans win inaugural Rising Stars competition

The Swans womens 21s team is the 2010 ‘Rising Stars’ Champions after a convincing win over Southern River at EFTel Oval on Saturday.

Led by captain Allana Dickie, Swans went into the finals series undefeated and showed promising form to defeat East Fremantle in the first semi final on Friday night.

Swans came out firing in the Grand Final with goal sneak Skye Cameron converting in the opening minutes.

The game soon steadied with Southern River returning fire from the boot of talented 13 year old Caitlin Edwards.

Both teams failed to convert a number of scoring opportunities late in the first half and Swans went into the break only a goal in front.

School Football Season Launch

Term 2 will signal the start of the 2010 school football season, and in particular the Belt Up Cup and Smarter than Smoking Schoolgirl’s Cup for upper school students across Western Australia.

From competitions which started with humble beginnings, this year marks the 23rd year of the Belt Up Cup & 15th year of the Smarter than Smoking Schoolgirls Cup. In 2010 over 4,500 students from country & metropolitan schools will participate.

New focus for Piranhas in 2010

THE Claremont Women’s Football Club is confident of positive preseason changes translating into on-field success for the 2010 season.

The Piranhas have laid down the foundations for improved performances with the appointment of former premiership Coach Mick Rogers as Head Coach for the new season.

Joining Mick is Division 2 Coach Bec Phoenix, who is already seeing results during what can only be described as gruelling preseason training.

WAAFL Season Launch

THE WA Amateur Football League launched the 2010 season on Wednesday with club presidents, sponsors and special guests gathering for a cocktail party ahead of the 2010 season.

The night was highlighted by guest speakers with WA Amateur Football League President John Davies paying tribute to long serving club presidents and presenting Ross Kelly with a certificate of appreciation for outstanding work for Community Football.

Country players to make AFL debut

FOUR players from country WA will make their AFL debut this weekend during Round 1 of the 2010 AFL Premiership Season.

Anthony Morbabito (Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault), Carl Peterson (Kununurra), Ben Howlett (Donnybrook) and Lewis Jetta (Bunbury) will all line up for their first taste of AFL when their respective clubs take the field.

Morabito, who selected at number four in the 2009 National Draft from Peel Thunder, will debut for Fremantle against Adelaide at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

Numbers adding up for footy in schools

THE AFL School Ambassador program reached a significant milestone last week when the 900th West Australian school teacher was inducted at Subiaco Oval.

A total of 75 teachers became new AFL School Ambassadors last Tuesday, March 16, with Wesley McGrath from Lumen Christie College becoming the 900th teacher to join the team in WA.

Special guests Mark Riddiford (AFL Schools Manager) and Steve Malaxos (East Fremantle Colts and Academy coach) were in attendance to encourage and support the newest AFLSA recruits.

Multicultural carnivals a huge success

CHILDREN from a variety of backgrounds received a taste of AFL football and the chance to meet West Coast player Nic Naitanui during a multicultural carnival at Lightning Park this week.

The carnival was one of two organised as part of a Community Participation initiative with both the West Australian Football Commission and Department of Sport and Recreation. The first was held at EFTel Oval on Monday, March 22 and the second at Lightning Park on Wednesday, March 24.

A total of 220 and 280 children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds attended each carnival, with South Fremantle premiership player Paul Mugambwa attending on the Monday and Naitanui lending a hand on the Wednesday, both as multicultural rolemodels.

Thrilling contests a highlight

The WAWFL ‘RISING STARS’ under 21 competition's penultimate round brought the best two games of the series with a magnificent match on Friday night between the Swans and the Bulldogs, and then an unbelievable comeback from the Sharks pushed the Titans to the last minute with power forward Sarah Noga icing a thrilling game.
