WAAFL Board vacancies

The WA Amateur Football League Board advises that there will be two positions declared vacant at this year’s Annual General Meeting.

The positions of two board members will be declared vacant in accordance with the requirements of the League’s Rules.

WAAFL Hall of Champions to be launched in 2010

THE Western Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL) today announced the introduction of an Amateur Football Hall of Champions to honour the elite of the competition.

The first induction is set to be held in May 2010, with inductee’s to receive a specially designed lapel pin and certificate at the ceremony.

The concept will closely follow that of the West Australian Football Commission’s Hall of Fame, with a special annual event to be held to induct champions of Amateur Football.

Kicking Goals in Melbourne from the Pilbara

The Kicking Goals program has now been operating in the Pilbara towns of Port Hedland and Newman since 2005. It is a unique partnership between the Senior High Schools of each town, BHP Billiton Iron Ore and the West Coast Eagles and Swan Districts Football Clubs. At the heart of Kicking Goals is the utilisation of sport (in this case, football) to attract students to school and to encourage them to achieve results and standards that enable them to continue participating in the program.

‘Smitty’ honoured as inaugural life member

EAST Fremantle stalwart Lynette ‘Smitty’ Geaney was honoured recently as the first woman to receive life membership to the club after 20 years of service as a player, president and secretary for the women’s team.

‘Smitty’ was thrilled to receive her medallion, describing it as an overwhelming honour. “I am overwhelmed. I love my footy and this club and that’s why I keep getting involved,” she said.

Club champion receives strong support

ONE of Ocean Ridge’s greatest clubmen, Jon Sharp, has been appointed head coach of the West Australian State 16’s Talent Academy ahead of some of WA football’s brightest minds.

The move to appoint Sharp is one that has received wide-spread endorsement from those who were involved with the Ocean Ridge icon’s amateur career, which spanned over 10 seasons.

WA Football Commission High Performance Manager Jon Haines paid tribute to Sharp and the community coaching pathways which led him to the State job.

Road Safety Skippers of the Year

As part of the Belt Up sponsorship of the WACFL, each club nominated a Road Safety Skipper to promote this important message throughout the year across their clubs and communities.  This involved conducting exit checks at entry and exit points at the grounds and ensuring all occupants in these vehicles were wearing seat belts and driving safely in general.

Outstanding figures for WA Auskick

THE outstanding success of Western Australia’s Auskick program continued in 2009, with more than 22,000 children participating in the competition – almost 10 times the number that kicked off in 1990.

Two decades on from its commencement, Auskick in WA produced an astounding participation rate of 22,638 for 2009, which has steadily increased from 2655 when modified rules started as ‘Freeball’ in 1990.

Peel claims Nicky Winmar Cup

PEEL took out the 2009 Nicky Winmar Cup at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah last week, defeating a combined Metro North side by 10 goals in a dominant Grand Final display.

The Nicky Winmar Cup was played as a 16’s Carnival for indigenous youth, with five teams competing for the Cup from the South West, Central Great Southern and Peel, as well as the metropolitan area.

The carnival was played in a round-robin format, with Peel and Metro North losing one game each to qualify for the Grand Final.

Country players dominate on WAFLs big stage

Three country footballers were recognised as Best on Ground in the recent West Australian Football League Grand Finals.

Looma Eagles player Lewis Broome, from Claremont, won the Mel Whinnen Medal for Best on Ground in the Colts Grand Final following his four goal performance and eye catching speed through the midfield.
