WAFL Round 12 match reportsSaturday, June 10, 2017 - 6:22 PM - by Chris Pike

THERE were two thrillers in the WAFL in Round 12 on Saturday with Peel Thunder and Claremont withstanding stirring fightbacks by South Fremantle and East Fremantle respectively while Subiaco had a comfortable win over Perth before West Perth beat Swan Districts on Sunday.

Three of the four Round 12 WAFL matches took place on Saturday afternoon and two of them were decided by under a goal in the finish.

Claremont was unveiling its redeveloped home of Claremont Oval playing its first game at the venue since the 2013 preliminary final, and the Tigers returned to the winner's list but only just.

East Fremantle came soaring home in search of its first win of 2017 and in response to a 145-point WA Day Foundation Derby loss. But Claremont held on to win 14.11 (95) to 14.8 (92) for the Tigers' first victory since Round 3.

It turned out another thriller at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, but that didn’t look too likely when Peel Thunder led South Fremantle by 46 points late in the second quarter.

But the Bulldogs also came surging home and drew level in the last quarter. But Peel's talls stood up with a mark in defence to Griffin Logue, one at half-forward to Sean Darcy and then one deep forward to Luke Strnadica who kicked the winning goal.

That saw Peel hold on for the 13.5 (83) to 11.11 (77) victory to improve to a 6-5 record on the season while South Fremantle slips to 7-4.

The other game on Saturday wasn’t quite as close with Subiaco moving further clear on top of the WAFL ladder defeating Perth 22.18 (150) to 11.9 (75) at Lathlain Park.

Then on Sunday, third spot on the ladder went on the line with Swan Districts hosting West Perth at Steel Blue Oval, and it was a tremendously hard-fought contest all afternoon.

The Falcons just managed to pull away late to record the crucial and hard earned 12.17 (89) to 12.9 (81) victory.
