John Septimus Roe take out Freo Dockers CupWednesday, July 26, 2017 - 3:37 PM

John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School defeated Willeton Senior High School by seven points in the Freo Dockers Cup Moore Division Grand Final in front of hundreds of passionate fans at Domain Stadium.

The thrilling match was played as a curtain raiser to the Fremantle Dockers Saturday night clash against Hawthorn on July 22.

Willeton raced out to a two-goal lead before JSR responded with a goal late before half time.

JSR were on a roll coming out of the half-time break and narrowed the margin down to one point at three quarter time.

In the final term JSR pushed to extend their lead and held on to secure the cup with a 4.4 (28) to 3.3 (21) victory over Willeton.

Rhiannon Couldridge (JSR) and Tessa Miotti (Willeton) both received the best and fairest award and a signed jumper by Fremantle’s inaugural AFL Women's side.

Couldridge said it was a great contest, and an experience she will never forget.

“Having the opportunity to play female football is an amazing experience, hearing the sound of the siren knowing you’ve just won the grand final is absolutely breath-taking, she said.

"I strongly encourage young girls to give this sport a go because it’s great fun."

West Australian Football Commission Schools and Female Competition Coordinator Darren Clutton said the competition was a great success.

“It was fantastic to conclude the competition with such a close contest which was played at an extremely high standard," he said.

“The Freo Dockers Cup Competition has continued to go from strength to strength and over the last five years we have seen a 65% increase in the number of school girl participants."

WAFC Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts commended all the umpires involved in the school competition.

“It is fantastic to see the high level of commitment and dedication these umpires demonstrated in their roles to ensure the competition ran smoothly and fairly,” he said.

The interschool competition provides female students in Years 10 to 12 with the opportunity to develop their football skills in an enjoyable and safe team environment.
