Winnacott claim 2017 WAFC State Championship titleWednesday, September 27, 2017 - 2:48 PM

Winnacott Junior Football Club has been named winners of the 2017 WA Football Commission (WAFC) State Championships, the first South Metro football club to take out the title, following three thrilling contests that unfolded at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday, September 23.

Winnacott put their best foot forward in the opening game of the championships against Mazenod, and finished with a 1.2 (8) – 0.2 (2) lead at the main break.

Winnacott didn’t look like slowing down one bit and secured three goals in the second term by Jordan Wallam, Adam Shrives and Chad Sims, which led to a 27-point win over Mazenod.

In the second game of the championships Ocean Ridge got off to a dominant start against Winnacott, with Travis Vickers kicking the opening goal of the clash.

But it was Winnacott who scored the next five goals to go into half time with a 5.4 (34) to 1.0 (6) lead over Ocean Ridge.

Ocean Ridge were up for the challenge in the second half and responded with three goals including a huge bomb outside 50 by Tyron Hindmarsh. 

Jordan Wallam confirmed Winnacott as the 2017 State Champions with his fifth goal for the game, and sixth for the day, just before the final siren.

Mazenod and Ocean Ridge battled it out for the championship runner-up title in the final clash of the day. It was a closely fought contest which saw Ocean Ridge make the most of opportunities early to lead Mazenod by eight points at the main break.

Ocean Ridge got the jump in the second half with an early goal to Joel Zoccoli giving them a 14-point lead then Mazenod responded and kicked the next three goals to take the lead.

Tryon Hindmarsh then put Ocean Ridge back in front with five minutes to go before Austin Leaver responded with a goal for Mazenod less than a minute later to regain the lead.

Curtis Altinier was extremely lively inside forward 50 all game and kicked his fifth goal inside the last minute to put the game out of reach for Ocean Ridge.
