Round 1 WAFL ResultsSaturday, March 31, 2018 - 8:44 AM - by Chris Pike

ROUND 1 of the 2018 WAFL season got underway on Good Friday with two matches and that saw the Grand Final combatants of the past two years Peel Thunder and Subiaco come away with strong victories.

It was an exciting way for the opening of the 2018 WAFL season to take place on Good Friday and it turned out to be a good occasion for the two clubs who have taken part in the past two Grand Final contests.

The premiers of the past two seasons, Peel Thunder, had to do it tough against East Fremantle but they came from behind to finish up winning 11.12 (78) to 9.9 (63) at Bendigo Bank Stadium.

That came after Peel unfurled its second premiership flag in front of its home crowd to open the day in Mandurah.

Then at Leederville Oval, it was the now traditional Good Friday contest between the two co-tenants and it was a dominant performance from Subiaco against East Perth.

The Lions have taken part in the past four WAFL Grand Finals and are showing no signs of slowing down after the 29.14 (188) to 10.10 (70) thumping of the Royals on Good Friday at Leederville Oval.

Then on Saturday afternoon, West Perth celebrated the official opening of its new club facility at HBF Arena beating Claremont 14.9 (93) to 12.3 (75).

The last game of the opening round took place at Lathlain Park with Swan Districts defeating Perth 16.16 (112) to 10.7 (67).
