WA Football Commission to support West Perth playing on in 2018Wednesday, July 25, 2018 - 7:48 PM

The WA Football Commission is providing support to enable the West Perth Football Club to play on for the remainder of the 2018 WAFL season after it entered Voluntary Administration this week.

The WAFC is providing a $250,000 loan to Korda Mentha, the Administrator which will manage West Perth during the Voluntary Administration process. The loaned funds will be quarantined to support West Perth players and staff at all levels to enable their ongoing participation in the 2018 WAFL Premiership Season. The funds will not be used to pay down West Perth’s existing debts.

WAFC Chief Executive Officer Gavin Taylor said the loan funding was about ensuring the integrity of the WAFL was maintained for the remainder of the season whilst recognising the funding constraints the WAFC has and its broader obligations for funding grassroots football across WA.

“The WAFL is the premier State League football competition with a rich history that we want to preserve, and West Perth has an important role to play in supporting the growth and development of football in the Northern Corridor of Perth,” Mr Taylor said.

“The WAFC’s role is to promote football at all levels within the new funding model we operate in. We exist to promote and develop football across all levels in WA which includes maintaining the integrity of a competitive, broadcast-quality WAFL competition that supports our talent pathway.

“So what the WAFC has sought to do is strike a balance between support for an individual club and the good of the competition as a whole. A loan to support the Administrator specifically to meet player, coach and staff commitments to ensure the team can play out the 2018 season was seen as the appropriate response from the WAFC.

“It will be up to West Perth’s donors, sponsors, and supporters to rally around the club to support the Administrator and the Club to find the funding it needs to continue on into the longer term.

“If you are a supporter of West Perth Football Club now is the time to offer your support to ensure the Club has a successful future.

“I would like to compliment the West Perth players and staff for their professional conduct during this challenging period in the club’s long history and we hope to see it play on in WAFL in the years to come.”

The West Perth Football Club is based at Joondalup Arena, within Perth’s northern population growth corridor, and the WAFC considers it important for the WAFL to continue to have a presence in that region over the longterm.

The voluntary administration process is being managed by Korda Mentha, who led the successful RugbyWA process. Specific enquiries regarding the Voluntary Administration can be directed to Korda Mentha
