Round 17 WAFL Wrap UpTuesday, July 22, 2014 - 11:40 AM - by Chris Pike

THERE were only three WAFL Round 17 matches on Saturday but they featured a seven-goal haul, a six-goal bag, two players booting five goals and that was only the start of the standout individual performances.

The three matches on Saturday afternoon saw Claremont storm back to beat Swan Districts 14.13 (97) to 14.10 (94) at the Claremont Showground, East Fremantle defeat Peel Thunder 14.14 (98) to 11.8 (74) at East Fremantle Oval and Subiaco hammered Perth 27.9 (171) to 15.8 (98) at Leederville's Medibank Stadium.

The round's results leave East Perth (12-2) still a game clear on top of the ladder but only just ahead of Subiaco (11-4). Swan Districts (11-4) now sits in third position followed by East Fremantle (10-5) in fourth.

Outside of the top four are West Perth (6-8), Claremont (6-9), South Fremantle (4-10), Perth (3-12) and Peel Thunder (3-12).

THE BIG WINNERS
Subiaco stormed into second position on the WAFL ladder on Saturday thanks to a 73-point win over Perth on the back of kicking the highest score of the season (27.9), the biggest first quarter by any team in 2014 (8.5) and the biggest final term (10.2).

The Lions replaced Swan Districts in second place on the ladder as a result of that victory and now sit 16 percentage points ahead of the black-and-whites, and are just a game behind the league-leading East Perth.

Subiaco can now further consolidate second position with a win over the disappointing South Fremantle this Saturday at Fremantle Oval before the following week taking on East Perth in a clash that very well could determine the minor premiership.

Not that it would matter should Subiaco and East Perth make up the top two positions given the clubs share Medibank Stadium and that's where the second semi-final would be played. Subiaco is the last team to have beaten East Perth, though, back on Good Friday with the Royals having won nine consecutive matches since.

THE BIG LOSERS
Swan Districts will be glad to have now played Claremont for the last time in 2014 with Saturday's loss to the Tigers costing the black-and-whites second position on the ladder, at least for now.

Swans have now played the Tigers three times over their last eight matches recording a hard fought win at home back in Round 9, then losing also at Steel Blue Oval in Round 14 and now having lost again on Saturday.

It was a disappointing loss for Swan Districts as well given it led by eight points at quarter-time, three points at half-time and 27 at three quarter-time before then coughing up six goals to one in the final term to lose.

Swans now finish the home and away season with matches against Perth, West Perth, East Perth, South Fremantle and East Fremantle.

THE SHINING LIGHTS
Claremont found itself behind all afternoon at the Showground against Swan Districts but then turned on a stunning last quarter with six goals to one to win by three points, and to mean the Tigers have now won three of their last four matches, and four of their last seven.

Jack Bradshaw and Brenden Abbott were the two star performers up forward for Claremont with Bradshaw booting a career-best seven goals from 18 possessions and eight marks, and Abbott an also career-best five goals from 13 disposals and six marks.

Luke Blackwell was once again the star in the midfield for Claremont continuing yet another remarkable season for the Sandover Medallist, Simpson Medallist, three-time fairest and best winner and dual premiership star.

Blackwell racked up another 38 possessions to go with seven inside-50 entries, five tackles and five marks.

Corey Yeo continued to show that he has been a good recruit from East Fremantle picking up another 26 possessions with Ryan Neates also gathering 25 disposals, Matthew Davies 24, Jake Murphy 23, Tom Ledger 23, Andrew Foster 21 and Jordan McAllister 20.

Mark Seaby dominated the ruck for Claremont finishing with 17 possessions, 50 hit outs, five inside 50s, five marks, four tackles and a goal.

Tim Geappen kicked four goals for Swan Districts from 13 touches and six marks while Aaron Elari, Ryan Davis, Aidan Anderson and Ricky Cary all booted two goals apiece.

Elari also picked up a team-high 23 possessions for Swans to go with his two goals while Jacob Burnham gathered 22 disposals, Connor Blakely 20, Tony Notte 20 (nine marks) and Matthew Jukes 19.

Graham Jetta finished with 14 possessions and four tackles in the 100th match of his WAFL career that has included the 2010 premiership and representing Western Australia.

Subiaco put in a stunning attacking display to beat Perth by 73 points on Saturday and improve to second position on the ladder.

Even without Lachlan Delahunty, Subiaco had plenty of options inside the forward 50 with Shane Yarran booting a career-best six goals, Rhys Waters a career-best equalling five, the Bernie Naylor Medal leader Matt Boland four, Andrew McDougall three and then Clancy Wheeler two when moved forward from defence in the final quarter.

McDougall was outstanding both when forward to kick his three goals but then also in the ruck after No. 1 big man Frank Stockley went down with a hamstring injury. McDougall finished the afternoon with 25 possessions, 11 marks, 17 hit outs, four inside-50 entries and the three goals against his former team.

As well as the bevy of goalkickers for the Lions, captain Kyal Horsley racked up another 35 possessions, George Hampson 25, Chris Phelan 23, Jason Bristow 20, Shaun Hildebrandt 20, Simon Moore 20 and Wayde Twomey 18.

Matt Moody and Cameron Manuel kicked three goals apiece for Perth with Gerald Ugle, Brennan Stack and Michael Sinclair all adding two each.

Aidan Tropiano continued his strong midfield form since crossing mid-season from East Fremantle to Perth and picked up a team-high 24 possessions.

Captain Paul Bevan also had 22 disposals and eight inside-50 entries for the Demons but he again struggled in front of goal with two behinds after five points the week before against South Fremantle. He was also reported for an incident that left Subiaco's Brett Mahoney concussed.

Dene White gathered another 22 possessions for Perth, Chance Bateman 20, Sinclair 20, Manuel 20, Michael Florio 19, Clem Smith 18, Matthew Hunt 17 and Daniel O'Sullivan 17.

East Fremantle was only a goal in front of Peel at three quarter-time on Saturday, but the Sharks then booted five goals to three in the final term to win by 24 points and stretch their lead to four games in fourth position over the fifth-placed West Perth.

Brett Peake kicked another three goals for East Fremantle with Jack Perham also showing improved form booting three majors from 18 possessions and five marks.

James Bristow worked hard as well for 14 possessions, 25 hit outs, four inside-50 entries and two goals.

Bradd Dalziell was again outstanding for the Sharks with 28 touches and two goals with Rory O'Brien racking up 33 possessions, Mark McGough 27, Scott Hancock 20, Sean Henson 18, Danny Chartres 17 and Steven Dodd 17.

Eddie Dann was outstanding for Peel finishing with 30 possessions, seven marks, four inside 50s, three tackles and two goals.

Hayden Crozier also added 25 touches, eight marks, four inside-50 entries and two goals for the Thunder.

Tom Sheridan racked up 34 possessions for Peel, Brendon Jones 26, Jacob Ballard 24, Laine Wilkins 21, Josh Mathers 19 and Alex Pearce 17 in defence.

With Jonathon Griffin getting the call up for Fremantle, Jack Hannath and Craig Moller weren’t quite able to have the same influence with Hannath ending up with 10 possessions and 25 hit outs, and Moller 16 disposals, seven marks, eight hit outs and a goal.

PUSHING FOR A SPOT
Claremont's reserves beat Swan Districts by 58 points at the Showground with Luke Salomone and Keegan Knott kicking three goals each, and Ben Higgs and Jackson Starcevich two.

Keifer Yu also racked up 32 possessions for Claremont, Tom Willett 29, Jared Hardisty 27, Aaron Holt 26, Henry Roberts 24, Dean Blackwell 22, Nicholas Steens 20, Jack Richardson 19 and Ashley Fitzgerald 18.

Dylan Nelson picked up 30 possessions for Swan Districts, David McKay 23, Ethan Hughes 19 and Ethan Maguire 17.

Subiaco's reserves also defeated Perth 10.17 (77) to 6.11 (47) with Ray Daniels and Darcy Boyle kicking three goals each, and Luke Norriss picking up 32 possessions, Matt Bogensperger 32, Justin Joyce 26, Nathan Stewart 24, Joe Scafidi 24, Joel Ashman 24, Stuart Berryman 22 and Ryan Wade 22.

Jesse Rose kicked two goals for Perth with Rowan Brookes finishing with 21 possessions, Kurtis Chester 19, Kieran Hug 19, Bradley Fry 19, Brent Edmonds 18.

East Fremantle's reserves scored a thumping 67-point win over Peel but it could have been by much more given the Sharks led by 94 points at three quarter-time, before the Thunder managed five goals to one in the final quarter at East Fremantle Oval.

Brandon Ellis, Tom Bowey, Dion Anthony, Miles Franklin, Adrian Ricciardello, Boston Williamson and Tom Hooker all kicked two goals each for the Sharks with Jake Schleicher finishing with 29 possessions, Hooker 27 and Tyler Chalwell 25.
