The Best in the West Recognised

WESTERN Australia’s top AFL School Ambassador is heading to the AFL Grand Final at the MCG after being selected as the State’s best footy-promoting teacher for 2012.

Adam Tetlow, from Mt Barker Community College, was named as recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Service as a Coles AFL School Ambassador Award at the premier dinner function at Patersons Stadium on Friday, August 17.
Also announced at the WA Football Commission’s AFLSA Academy Awards were the Most Outstanding Primary and Secondary School Ambassadors, Outstanding Female Program, Multicultural Program, Indigenous Program and Most Outstanding First Year Ambassador.

Eagles Cup soars into Seventeenth Year

The Seventeenth year of the Eagles Cup competition came to a close last week, with the final game of the year held as a Curtain Raiser to the West Coast v Geelong match. Two teams from South Perth Primary School and Deanmore Primary School went head to head to display their skills on the big stage.

The Eagles Cup has developed to such an extent that it is now recognized as the cornerstone of the winter primary school sports program and is the highlight of the second term sporting program for players and teachers alike.

AFL SportsReady Cup Champions

The 2012 AFL SportsReady Cup came to a climax with Clontarf Aboriginal College taking out the Cable Division Grand Final against CBC Fremantle.

The game was a real physical affair with both sides putting their bodies on the line. Clontarf took an early lead of 26 points at half time and continued their good form after the break to run out winners by 42 points.

This year’s Grand Final was played for the first time as a post AFL match fixture under lights at Patersons Stadium following the West Coast v Brisbane Lions match.

The AFL SportsReady Cup competition is the largest upper secondary school football competition in WA, with 3250 students from over 130 metropolitan and country schools competing this year. Over the 24 years the competition has been running approximately 55,000 boys have participated.

Fremantle Dockers community development programs a hit with students

Students from Winthrop Baptist College grabbed the opportunity to participate  in ‘Freo House Footy’ exhibition matches as part of the curtain raiser to the recent Fremantle v Greater Western Sydney AFL game.

Freo House Footy is a modified game that has strong parallels with the traditional game of Australian Football. Designed so that everyone can play, it is less physically demanding, has minimal time commitment with a major emphasis on fun and safety (non-contact).
