Girls Rule at East Perth District Freo Dockers Cup Carnival

It was a case of ‘Girls Rule’ at the East Perth Football District’s annual all-girls Freo Dockers Cup Lightning Carnivals, held over two days on November 2 and 3 at R.A.Cook Reserve in Morley.

First, it was the turn of the Primary School girls to showcase their footy skills. The Year 5 & 6 students made light of the hot conditions to have a fantastic day of friendly competition. Eight teams had a (Freo Dockers Cup) ball as they chased the footy around the home of the Morley Bulldogs.

There was a lot of talent and enthusiasm on show, as the teams battled for supremacy. In the end, it was the girls from East Beechboro Primary School who earned the coveted Freo Dockers Cup as the team who had the most fun and who displayed the best teamwork.

Aussie rules in the classroom

IT'S the secret weapon that is enticing boys back to the classroom.

Leftover copies of the AFL Record the official match-day footy publication have been handballed to WA country schools.

Principals report the results are already speaking for themselves, with dozens of once-reluctant young boys now taking an interest in class discussions.

Trinity wins five in a row

Trinity College’s domination of the WAFC Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup continued last Saturday night when they defeated CBC Fremantle by 34 points to win the WAFC Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup for the fifth year in a row.

This year’s grand final was played as the curtain raiser to the Round 24 match between West Coast v Adelaide in front of a crowd of 4500.

Since the competitions inception in 1983, the WAFC Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup has grown to become WA’s premier lower school football competition with 3925 students from over 180 schools competing this year.

WA Schools Star in National AFL Quiz

FOUR West Australian schools have claimed the top three places in the national AFL Quiz Finals Series, including a clean-sweep of the Year 3 and Year 7 categories.

Santa Clara’s Year 3 class claimed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their year group for WA, Glen Forrest Primary finished second in Year 5, while Kulin District High School finished 1st and 3rd and Dwellingup Primary 2nd in Year 7.

Students worked collaboratively in teams of three to complete the Australia-wide AFL Student on-line Quiz, which is an exciting educational initiative using AFL as the theme to support educational outcomes with a special focus on numeracy and literacy.

Top Footy Teachers Rewarded

WESTERN Australia’s top AFL School Ambassador is heading to the AFL Grand Final at the MCG after being selected as the State’s best footy-promoting teacher for 2011.

Comet Bay College teacher, Stephen Thomson, pictured, was named WA’s AFL School Ambassador of the Year at a special dinner function at Patersons Stadium on Friday, August 12. Steve claimed the major award for the second consecutive year after continuing his outstanding work with the Comet Bay Football Specialist Program.
