Sumich supports "Umpiring is Everyone’s Business"

West Coast Eagles Assistant Coach Peter Sumich umpired an Eagles Faction Footy game at South Perth Primary School on Monday, May 9 to help promote the "Umpiring is Everyone’s Business" campaign.

Sumich said it had been an eye-opening experience. "I had one little kid look at me when I made a decision, so I can only imagine what 100,000 people on grand final day looking at your decisions would feel like," he said.

"Umpiring can be a tough job, and is something we all have to embrace, as umpires get it right most of the time, and we should accept their decisions."

Wright appointed for WAFL umpiring debut

WAFL Umpire Jordan Wright made his WAFL League debut last Friday, April 1, in the Round 3 game between South Fremantle and Perth at Fremantle Oval.

Wright, who has progressed through the West Perth District, is aiming to follow  the same journey as former AFL and WAFL Umpires Greg Scroop and Sam Kronja, who also umpired in the West Perth District in 1980’s.

Wright described his League appointment as a big buzz and said he had been thinking about it ever since the previous Tuesday night when it was announced.

Female field umpire to make WAFL debut

History will be made when Amy Treeby becomes the first female field umpire to officiate in the WAFL competition during tonight’s Round 2 Subiaco and West Perth Colts game at Medibank Stadium.

Treeby, 27, who commenced umpiring in the South Fremantle District and progressed under the guidance of Senior Community Umpire Manager Glenn Omodei, said she was looking forward to the challenge and was proud that her hard work had paid off with a WAFL appointment.

Hendrie to break umpiring record

Craig Hendrie will officiate in his 314th WAFL/AFL League game in Round 1 of the 2011 AAMI WAFL Premiership season, breaking Grant Vernon’s record which has been held since 1999.

Last year’s Montgomery medallist and five-time grand final umpire commenced umpiring in 1995 and has been a great contributor on an off the field.

State Umpire Coach Darryl Sinclair paid tribute to Hendrie for his persistence, commitment and ability to ride the highs and lows that umpiring brings.

"To umpire over 16 seasons is an indication of Craig’s outstanding character," Sinclair said.

Laycock appointed to AFL goal umpire Panel

Congratulations to WAFL goal umpire Matt Laycock for his appointment to the AFL goal umpire Panel for season 2011. 

Matt joined the WAFL goal umpire Panel in 2003 after graduating from the Swan Districts Junior Football Council Umpire Panel.

Matt umpired his first WAFL senior game in 2006 and had amassed a total 86 senior games at the end of 2010. His career achievements include representing WA at the AFL 18s Carnival in 2008 and 2009; umpiring the WAFL Reserves Grand Final in 2008; and umpiring the 2009 WAFL senior Grand Final.
