 WAFL Talent Manager

The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) is the peak Australian Rules Football body in Western Australia and is the caretaker of football throughout the State and responsible for the overall development of the game. The WAFC is a not for profit organisation that plays an important role in funding the on-going development of football in all communities. This ensures that football is the best resourced sporting code in the State and can have the most active role in building better communities through various development programs.

The new WA Talent Model has been developed by the WA Football Commission in partnership with the AFL and the nine WAFL Clubs and represents one of the key reforms from the WAFC’s Structural Review of Football, which was launched in March 2017. This Model will see player development aligned with the AFL’s National Framework and Talent Development Philosophy, to provide WA’s most talented players with the best possible chance to play at the elite AFL level or in the nation’s best State League competition, the WAFL.

The Talent Manager role is integral to the establishment of the new WA Talent Model. This role will have responsibility for the effective identification of talented players within each WAFL zone and also the planning, implementation and monitoring of the club’s player development program. The role will require outstanding stakeholder management skills, strong understanding of athlete development principles and excellent planning and communication capability.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work in collaboration with WAFL club staff, directors and volunteers at all times to deliver mutually beneficial outcomes and in line with agreed objectives
  • Develop and deliver the strategic plan for the WA talent pathway, in the context of a national agenda
  • Ensure that the integrity and brand of the WA talent pathway is maintained at all times
  • Oversee the delivery of best practice program delivery within the WAFL club environment
  • Ensure alignment with WAFC and AFL expectations in regards to program content, program quality and program philosophy.
  • Ensure access for regionally based players is always a focus, maintains a strong sense of flexibility and is premised on equality of opportunity.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a talent identification framework that ensures all talented players are identified and provided with the appropriate level of support (metro & regional).
  • Ensure appropriate levels of support and alignment with AFL activities such as AFL / AIS Academy, National Combine, State Screening, GPS units
  • Work closely with the WAFC and key staff in order to drive the talent agenda and ongoing education of the WAFC management team on talent issues.

Essential selection criteria:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and relationship building skills
  • Outstanding stakeholder management skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage operations in a timely, organised and professional manner
  • High level strategic thinking acumen and demonstrated leadership capability
  • Extensive understanding of WA Football structure and the issues involved in the talent pathway
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours
  • Experience in working with a range of stakeholder groups
  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in sports management or education will be favorably considered.
