The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) is the peak Australian Rules Football body in Western Australia and is the caretaker of football throughout the State and responsible for the overall development of the game. The WAFC is a not for profit organisation that plays an important role in funding the on-going development of football in all communities. This ensures that football is the best resourced sporting code in the State and can have the most active role in building better communities through various development programs.

The new WA Talent Model has been developed by the WA Football Commission in partnership with the AFL and the nine WAFL Clubs and represents one of the key reforms from the WAFC’s Structural Review of Football, which was launched in March 2017. This Model will see player development aligned with the AFL’s National Framework and Talent Development Philosophy, to provide WA’s most talented players with the best possible chance to play at the elite AFL level or in the nation’s best State League competition, the WAFL.

The Colts Coach role will be the central coaching role within the new WA Talent Model. This role will have responsibility for the development of an integrated coaching and performance program that maximises individual player development. The role will require a true passion for developing young players, sound knowledge of teaching and coaching principles and outstanding communication and planning skills.

Key responsibilities:

  • Select the most talented developing players available who demonstrate the most distinct attributes to progress into WAFL senior football and/ or AFL football
  • To provide support, input and advice to WAFC coach development staff in the education and development of WAFL pathway coaches and more broadly community coaches
  • Work in collaboration with WAFL club staff, directors and volunteers at all times to deliver mutually beneficial outcomes and in line with agreed objectives
  • Preparation, communication & implementation of a training plan which is appropriate for this stage of the player pathway
  • Evidence the program caters for individual differences and varying player workloads as well as encouraging the physical development of players through the strength and conditioning coaches and programs
  • Regular communication with State Talent Manager and WAFC Coach Coordinator on training and program operations
  • Liaise regularly with all WAFL Coaches & Staff on matters of selection & talent identification
  • Provide regular information to parents / players on an on-going basis on their performance, development and future directions
  • Present coach education seminars and support community coach education programs when required

Essential selection criteria:

  • Minimum Level 2 coach accreditation
  • Demonstrated knowledge, involvement and understanding of talent development programs
  • Demonstrated leadership skills along with highly developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Mentor/teaching skills that develop trust and respect
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and communicate sequential training and game plans
  • Demonstrated ability to develop high levels of team unity
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire individuals and teams in the pursuit of individual and team
  • achievement

Additionally, demonstrated working knowledge of vision editing programs as well as WAFL or WAAFL coaching experience will be favorably considered.
