Foxtel Cup: Claremont belts Southport

WEST Coast rookie Jeremy McGovern has proven he is well and truly over an ankle injury, leading Claremont to a 54-point Foxtel Cup belting of Southport at Patersons Stadium on Tuesday night.

McGovern, the son of former Fremantle and Sydney Swans player Andrew McGovern, appeared completely unrestricted by his ankle, kicking three goals in the first half to help the Tigers race away to a commanding 44-point lead by the main break.

State 18s prepare for Vic Country

WA's State 18s will head east next week to take on Victoria Country with the aim of notching up their first Division One win of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

After convincing wins over Division 2 teams Tasmania and the Northern Territory, WA was defeated by Division One side Victoria Metro 15.10 (100) to 12.9 (81) on the weekend in a tough contest at Patersons Stadium.

After Vic Metro built a 30-point lead in the first quarter, Western Australia came back in the second half and even closed to within six points in the final term.

But Metro had too many contributors. Ben Lennon kicked four goals and Mitch Honeychurch put in a best-on-ground performance.

Blaine Johnson was WA's leading goalkicker with four, while key forwards Jonathon Marsh and Cameron McCarthy impressed again with three goals each.
