Martin fit and readey to lead royals from defence

Hard as nails East Perth defender Trent Martin hopes his run of injuries is all behind him now and after a strong pre-season the 24-year-old feels he's ready to get back to being one of the WAFL's best backmen.

Martin burst onto the scene with Claremont in 2004 and quickly became one of the best young defenders in the competition, but two knee reconstructions quickly put a halt to that.

He then crossed over to East Perth with the hope of playing with older brother Kyle and younger one Curtis, and had a terrific 2008 season before injury struck again.

Falcons flying on top of the WAFL

WEST Perth has started the season in tremendous fashion to be atop the WAFL ladder with a 3-0 record and Bill Monaghan is confident of the form continuing on Sunday even though he knows South Fremantle will be fired up.

The Falcons have now beaten Swan Districts (54 points), Subiaco (37) and East Perth (17) to start the season in the best possible way and West Perth plays as a real team and with great spirit.

When the Falcons get their game going the ball movement displayed is terrific and was behind the win on Monday in front of a big crowd at Medibank Stadium as they ran over the top of East Perth.

Swans bounce back with big effort

SWAN Districts bounced back from a slow start to 2010 with an impressive win over South Fremantle and coach Brian Dawson was delighted to see his team respond in that fashion.

There was high hopes on Swans for a successful 2010 campaign, but Dawson was a little concerned when he saw his team thumped in each practice match and then in Round 1 by West Perth at Arena Joondalup, but the effort against the Bulldogs after a bye was tremendous.

Captain Josh Roberts, Andrew Krakouer, Clancee Pearce, Michael Walters, Ben Colreavy and Travis Casserly all knocked up getting the ball, Garth Taylor booted three goals and the defence led by Tallan Ames (kept Ryan Murphy to one goal) and Tony Notte (McCarrey goalless) was terrific.

Signs all pointing north for Tigers

CLAREMONT could not have started the 2010 season any better with two 100-plus point wins and the most pleasing thing for coach Simon McPhee is that the whole squad has bought into the new plan.

Claremont had the bye last week after thumping Peel (110 points) and South Fremantle (102) in the opening two rounds, and now will look to topple Subiaco on Sunday at Medibank Stadium for the first time since the 2007 second semi-final.

McPhee took over midway through last season, but has now had a full summer to put in place strategies he believes will lead to sustained success at Tigerland with a strong playing group and new-look coaching staff.
