Former Claremont and AFL assistant coach Michael Broadbridge has been appointed as WAFL State coach for this year’s Carlton Draught State Game against the Victorian Football League (VFL) at North Port Oval on May 27.

Broadbridge, who has previously represented Western Australia as a player and a coach, said he was looking forward to another opportunity to be involved with State football.

“I am thrilled to be offered the role of WAFL State Coach for this year’s game against Victoria,” he said.

“I look back on my previous involvements at State level as highlights in my football career. To take a senior State team across to Victoria represents the ultimate challenge and it is one that I am already looking forward to.”

WAFC Executive Manager Football Operations Jon Haines said that securing a State Coach of Broadbridge’s experience was a great outcome for the WAFL as it prepared to take on the VFL.

“All nine WAFL clubs have supported the appointment of an independent coach over the last few seasons and it’s terrific we have someone of Michael’s calibre to take on the role this year,” Haines said.

“He has extensive coaching experience at the highest level and has represented WA both as a player and a coach. He is highly regarded at all levels of the game and I believe that he will provide the players and staff with an outstanding preparation for what promises to be an exciting showcase of state football.

“WA has a proud record at state level and we look forward to maintaining these high standards under Michael’s leadership,” he said.

The appointment of Broadbridge as an independent WAFL State coach follows the success of Darren Harris in the same capacity for the past two seasons.

Harris, who coached the WAFL to a 44-point victory over the SANFL in 2015 and record 134-point win over Tasmania last year, has since replaced Broadbridge as Claremont League coach.

WAFL State team assistant coaches will be appointed over the coming months and South Fremantle Football Club will provide support staff for the 2017 State Game.
