Eagles AFLW Stars Support Female Footy Initiative

The West Australian Football Commission has forecast a spike in female football participation following the latest “Come and Try Day” at the West Coast Eagles.

The WAFC and the West Coast Eagles hosted the event at Mineral Resources Park last Saturday, with 50 girls across Auskick ages (Pre-Primary to Year 2) and Modified participants (Years 3-6) taking part in the two hour session with their families.

The “Come and Try Day” also featured input from AFLW players Ella Roberts, Charlie Thomas, Courtney Rowley, Emily Elkington, Zoe Wakfer and Lauren Wakfer, while the session also included an introductory coaching course for 10 Mums.

Michelle Sewell, Auskick & Alternate Formats Specialist at the WAFC, is optimistic about female participation this season.

“This year is going to see the largest number of all-girls Auskick centres across WA, due to the huge uptake and excitement building across the community for females to be a part of our great game.

It’s our vision that by 2025 we’ll have an all-girls grid option at every Auskick Club/Centre, which would be a great achievement,” she said

Sewell also urged teams to book their spot for the upcoming season.

“Auskick and modified footy registrations are currently open, but team nominations for mods will be closing soon.

So, jump onboard today.”

The return of AFL action to Perth this weekend also puts our potential stars of the future on display.

“This week sees our first Auskick and Little League activations at Optus Stadium during the Dockers and Eagles home games.

To be a part of these, you need to be playing Auskick or footy at your local community club,” Sewell said.
