For the 2022 season the WAFL has released the first nine rounds of the season where every team will play each other once. This decision was made to allow for flexibility if a COVID outbreak occurs in Western Australia. If all goes to plan the second block of fixtures will be released by Round 7 of the WAFL home and away season.
The 20-round home-and-away season will be followed by a four-week finals series, with the WAFL Grand Final scheduled to be played on Saturday October 1 at this stage with the venue to be confirmed. Fresh from the resounding success of moving the Grand Final to the week after the AFL Premiership decider last year, the WAFL is confident the same timeline will provide an ideal finish to the 2022 season.

WAFC Executive Manager WAFL & Talent, Scott Baker said the decision to release the first 9 Rounds allows flexibility in the back half of the season.
“We’ve decided to ensure teams plays each other once before re-assessing the fixture, which remains subject to change because of COVID uncertainty in the community.”
The opening round of the 2022 WAFL Premiership season begins with an Easter blockbuster, featuring five matches across the long weekend.
Round 1 provides the much-anticipated Grand Final Re-Match between Subiaco and South Fremantle at Leederville Oval, while co-tenants Perth and the West Coast Eagles do battle at Mineral Resources Park.
The season opener also sees the return to the WAFL of veteran coach Darren Harris, leading West Perth against Claremont, the club he guided to the 2020 Grand Final.
New Peel coach Geoff Valentine begins with a home showdown with East Fremantle, while East Perth hosts Swan Districts to complete a bumper start to the year.
A focus on traditional rivalries and feature rounds will bring excitement across the season, with ANZAC Day, WA Day and NAIDOC Rounds all standouts.
The WA Football Commission is working closely with the SANFL to continue the tradition of the KIA Australia State Game with the intent to play the game in mid-May at Optus Stadium.
WAFC Executive Manager WAFL & Talent, Scott Baker said players, clubs and fans should be excited about the prospect of a highly competitive WAFL season in 2022.
“The fixture is developed to grow and enhance the WAFL, supporting feature rounds and offering prime-time television coverage,” Baker said.
“The 20-round-home-and-away season continues to provide the fairest fixture as well as creating the most exciting state league competition in Australia.”
“Opening the season across the Easter weekend should attract strong crowds, allowing our family friendly audience to experience and enjoy a WAFL match day full of activities.”
“WAFL clubs continue to create a fantastic atmosphere for fans and families, alongside the unique chance to get close to the action, listen to the coaches and enjoy a kick on the ground at breaks.”
While the traditional timeslot of Saturday afternoon will be consistent throughout the season, the addition of alternative matchdays allows the WAFL to remain flexible.
“Playing games across the weekend creates opportunities for the WAFL, including attracting a larger audience, both at the ground and on TV, as well as supporting initiatives such as WA Day and NAIDOC Week,” Baker said.
“As the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic continue, our competition is committed to remaining flexible.”
WAFL Pre-Season fixtures are scheduled to begin on March 26.
