IT was a day of drama and surprises in Round 17 of the WAFL on Saturday with a dramatic draw between South Fremantle and Swan Districts while Claremont thumped East Perth, and Peel Thunder and Subiaco had hard earned victories.

There were four games in Round 17 on Saturday with West Perth and East Fremantle having the bye, and each of them turned out to be dramatic affairs in their own right.

First up was Subiaco returning to the winner’s list and denying West Coast consecutive victories with the 16.11 (107) to 13.10 (88) win at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

Ryan Borchet kicked five goals and debutant Malakai Champion three for the Lions while Coen Livingstone kicked three for the Eagles.

Two teams inside the top five then did battle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on the day that Tony Notte surpassed the games record he shared with Bill Walker at Swan Districts with his 306th appearance.

In the end, South Fremantle produced a big finish and it was a behind to Manfred Kelly as the siren sounded with the ball coming off hands on the goal line that saw both teams locked at 8.12 (60) apiece for the draw.

Claremont then celebrated the 150th game of Sandover Medallist Bailey Rogers and 100th WAFL game of Callan England in style by knocking East Perth from top spot with the 13.9 (87) to 3.10 (28) win at Revo Fitness Stadium.

Zac Mainwaring kicked a career-best five goals for Claremont and Rogers celebrated earning life membership with 29 possessions.

Last up and Peel Thunder had to fight hard but ended up beating the bottom placed Perth 13.8 (86) to 10.7 (67) at Mineral Resources Park to replace East Perth in top spot.

Matt Taberner kicked three goals for Peel with Neil Erasmus racking up 34 possessions while Aaron Clarke kicked four goals for the Demons and Charlie Constable had 32 disposals.
