More than 120 West Australian Football League umpires and support staff will wear blue armbands at Round 11 McDonald’s WAFL Premiership games this weekend to help raise awareness of motor neurone disease (MND).
A total of 96 umpires and 30 support staff will be wearing blue armbands at Colts, Reserves and League games in the lead-up to the AFL’s ‘Big Freeze at the G’ campaign on Monday June 8, which aims to raise money to find a cure for MND.
Former AFL player and coach Neale Daniher is the face of the campaign after being diagnosed with MND two years ago. His son Luke Daniher is the WAFL Umpires Strength and Conditioning Coach.
WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said it was terrific that the WAFL umpiring group could help raise awareness of a cause that was so close to them.
“Luke is such an important member of our umpiring team and we thought it was a fantastic idea to get behind this cause and show our support,” Sinclair said.
