THE path from junior football to WAFL league football takes many routes. While most are identified at an early age and come through club talent programs, it can be a different story for country boys. 

Some come to the city as soon as they can and play Colts with boys they hope to carve a career with, while others bide their time in the 'bush' and move when they think the time is right.

Scott Worthington, 19, has been an instant hit at Subiaco playing in the first six league games of the 2010 season since arriving from the Goldfields.

So what is the best way of a country boy achieving his dreams? According to Subiaco coach Chris Waterman: “it’s an entirely different situation for every boy.  Some need to be nurtured through the Colts system and to be part of it, otherwise they get left behind. 

"Others succumb to the temptations of city life and lose their focus on football.  In the case of Scott he was in an ideal family and sporting environment in Kalgoorlie and therefore waiting until he and his family believed he was ready and it was the right thing to do.

"Wortho plays with maturity well beyond his years and he has excellent defensive and attacking skills.  There is no reason why he cant go on to be a 150 game WAFL player,” Waterman said.

Worthington comes from the Boulder Football Club and parents Phil and Rhonda are local football identities.  Phil has had a stint as Club President at Boulder and Rhonda works tirelessly for both Boulder and the Goldfields Football League. 

The rising talent had a taste of development squad games in his junior years, but usually preferred to concentrate on his sporting commitments in the Goldfields. 

He has played senior football in the GFL for the past three years and he has represented the Goldfields in both the Great Southern and the Landmark carnivals. Scott Worthington is a name to watch in the WAFL.
