THE WAFL's Rivalry Round began on Saturday with Peel upsetting Claremont before Swan Districts beat Perth on Sunday and then there were the two incredible WA Day derby blockbusters on Monday that saw East Fremantle beat South Fremantle, and West Perth and East Perth draw.
Peel began the Rivalry Round on Saturday afternoon with a stunning upset over Claremont at Claremont Oval.
The Thunder climbed off the bottom of the ladder with the 14.14 (98) to 11.18 (84) victory over the league-leaders and reigning premiers.
Matt Battye, Eddie Dann and Brad Holmes all kicked three goals for Peel with Tom Sheridan outstanding with 25 possessions and two goals as well. Chad Jones kicked three for Claremont with Byron Schammer the leading possession winner on the ground with 28.
Then on Sunday, Perth was able to stick with Swan Districts for the majority of the first three quarters, but in the end slipped to the bottom of the ladder with Swans running away 22.12 (144) to 15.8 (98) winners.
Ash Hansen kicked seven goals for Swan Districts, Murray Newman five and Matt Riggio was brilliant with 37 disposals and three goals. Joel Leeson, Leon Davis, Matt Moody and Michael Mather all kicked two goals apiece for Perth.
West Perth and East Perth played out an amazing draw at Arena Joondalup on Monday in front of around 5000 people. The Falcons led by 40 points at half-time only to see East Perth storm home to hit the front in the last quarter.
However, West Perth again looked home late when Andrew Strijk goaled to put the Falcons in front, but Josh Smith got a last second goal for East Perth to secure the 15.9 (99) to 15.9 (99) draw.
Strijk kicked four goals for West Perth with Jay van Berlo and Matt Guadagnin gathering 23 disposals apiece. Smith kicked three goals for East Perth with Freddie Clutterbuck brilliant with 27 possessions and two goals.
East Fremantle led South Fremantle by 20 points midway through the third quarter, but were 10 points down in the Fremantle derby at Fremantle Oval by midway through the last. However, the Sharks booted the last three goals to win 16.14 (110) to 15.12 (102).
Justin Monaco kicked five goals for East Fremantle, Jack Perham four and Sean Henson was outstanding with 23 possessions and two goals. Andrew McCarrey booted seven goals for South Fremantle and Ben Saunders three.
