State Talent and Draft"
Nine WA players will be put to the test on Thursday afternoon as part of the 2022 AFLW Draft Combine.
The AFL has confirmed details for the Combine, which will to be held across Australia over the next three weeks.
Talent Program Specialist at the West Australian Football Commission Elly Lambkin says the Combine is a great opportunity for players to showcase their athletic ability to AFLW clubs.
“The results for the day will be important when it comes to a player’s endurance and physical capabilities but playing good footy in the WAFLW remains the most important element ahead of Draft day,” said Lambkin.
Local players will face one physical test, with all players to complete a 2km time trial at the WA Athletics Stadium in Floreat.
“This time of the year is always an exciting time for players, and it’s good to see the hard work they’ve put in over the years on display at the Combine.
Last year we had all players run a 2km personal best time in the time trial and are expecting this year’s athletes to be running their best times as well,” Lambkin said.
The testing brings together the best draft prospects at state-based events around the country, ahead of the Draft on Wednesday June 29.
This year’s NAB AFLW Draft Combine will be held across 10 locations, with more than 100 players invited to attend.
78 players will be eligible for the NAB AFLW Draft for the first time, and a further 28 open-age players.
The reduction in testing at this year’s Combine takes into consideration changes to AFLW timelines, along with the significant amount of pre-season testing which was conducted nationally earlier this year.
AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan said players invited to the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft Combine represented the next crop of AFLW stars.
“We’re very excited about the high level of talent within this group of future stars in the AFLW.
The 2022 version of the NAB AFLW Draft Combine will be shorter than those held in previous years, however the on-field performance of this group of players over the past season has provided a great indication that they’ll have a huge impact on the NAB AFLW competition,” Sheehan said.
