South West Football League are in the hunt to win their third Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Football Championships Division One title in four years after qualifying for Sunday’s decider at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
The reigning champs take on Peel Cavaliers for the Division One title after just seven points separated the two sides in their previous clash on Friday.
South West bounced back from their narrow loss to Peel on Friday to defeat Great Northern and Goldfields by 46 and 18 points respectively on Saturday.
Zac Trigwell (three) and Matthew Burton (two) combined for five majors against the GNFL, with Jye Clark – the younger brother of Dockers star Jordan – lively on the wing.
Former Shark Burton added another three against Goldfields, with Jack Fletcher continuing his strong carnival with another big performance.
A straight-shooting Avon caused an upset over the previously-undefeated Peel to keep their grand final hopes alive with Quinn Bird the hero.
Bird’s final-minute goal gave last year’s finalists a stunning three-point win – 6.0 (36) to 4.9 (33) – after they trailed for the majority of the contest.
Former St Kilda big man Tom Lee and ex-Subi talent Kaidyn Fullgrabe, both previous winners of the Division One fairest-and-best award, were huge in the come-from-behind win.
But their chances were dashed the following game as Goldfields came from behind for a thrilling one-point victory.
Both Avon and Goldfields finished with 2-2 records, one win behind the grand finalists.
Peel thrashed Great Northern to complete their second day with a10.9 (69) to 0.2 (2) result.
Former Peel Thunder pair Ethan Logan and Kaine Ah Chee kicked three apiece, with Rockingham stalwart Andrew Walsh producing yet another dominant game.
Great Southern face Upper Great Southern in the Division Two finale after finishing top of the table with an unbeaten 4-0 record.
Upper Great Southern snatched second spot from Central Midlands Coastal in the final game of the day with a 21-point victory.
‘Uppers’ recovered from a half-time deficit to kick five goals to one in the second half with Ryan Melvin (two goals) and Tom Kilpatrick leading the way.
It was Central Midland Coastal’s first loss of the carnival, with the UGSFL’s superior percentage enough to claim second spot.
Great Southern sealed their spot by defeating Ongerup by 22 points with former Claremont and East Fremantle speedster Morgan Davies winning the Jim Hull Medal as best-afield.
In Division Three, Lower South West will face Mortlock who claimed second spot ahead of Central Wheatbelt.
LSWFL had a perfect 4-0 record after day two, with their heart-stopping four-point win over Central Wheatbelt one of the games of the day.
Mortlock then recovered from a goalless first half to defeat Central Wheatbelt by 16 points on the back of a four-goals-to-none second half.
