Olivia Wolmarans has made history as WA’s first ever No.1 AFLW draft pick in Melbourne this evening.
The Subiaco key forward was snapped up by Richmond with the opening pick of the 2025 AFLW Draft at Marvel Stadium.
It came after the Tigers were rumoured to have settled in Victorian Scarlett Johnson before reports just hours before the draft that Wolmarans was in their sights.
The talented goal-kicker has enjoyed an excellent draft year which included selection in the AFLW Under-18s All-Australian Team and booting 17 majors in 11 WAFLW appearances for Subiaco.
Remarkably, it was WA’s first No.1 draft pick at any level since David Swallow was drafted by Gold Coast back in 2010.
Peel Thunder defender/midfielder Evie Cowcher was the next West Aussie to go, heading to Geelong with pick 11.
Cowcher was touted as WA’s best draft prospect heading into this year before a lower-back injury restricted her to a handful of WAFLW appearances for the Thunder.
WA Football’s Female Talent Manager Trent Cooper labelled Cowcher, who is now injury-free and ready to hit the ground running for the Cats, as the most talented junior he’s seen.
West Perth ball magnet Mia Russo was WA’s third first-round pick as West Coast selected the home-grown talent with pick 20.
All up 10 West Aussies realised their AFLW dreams which doubled the previous record of five.
