The WA Football coaching team has embraced an opportunity to deliver a series of educational and immersive experiences for community coaches across the state as part of the AFL Origin Program.

The week began with WAFL League Head Coaches Ash Prescott (Claremont) and Andrew Pruyn (Swan Districts) leading engaging masterclasses for more than 70 coaches.

Their sessions focused on rotations, small-sided games, and fundamental skill development, along with practical strategies for adapting these concepts to different age groups and ability levels.

Beatrice Devlyn, Female & Diversity Coaching Coordinator, reflected on what the local coaches delivered.

“It was a fantastic way to launch the program, and we sincerely thank both coaches for their time and commitment to developing our coaching community,” Devlyn said.

Five female coaches and five male coaches were also invited to attend the WA and Victorian Origin training sessions, providing a unique behind-the-scenes look at elite preparation and planning.

The female coaches had the opportunity to hear from Assistant Coach and Fremantle Head Coach Justin Longmuir, who shared insights into WA’s session planning and the challenges of bringing together a squad of 25 players who had never previously played as a team.

Following the session, WA Head Coach and Sydney Swans leader Dean Cox addressed the group, offering further perspective on high-performance preparation.

Sam Mitchell also spoke to the coaches about building cohesion within a team of individuals who have traditionally competed against one another.

“Sam’s insights into fostering connection, alignment, and shared purpose were invaluable, Devlyn said.

“It was an incredible opportunity made possible through WA Football and the AFL.”

To conclude the week, Female Talent Coach Kate Orme hosted eight female coaches at State training, providing valuable exposure to high-performance planning and delivery at the next level.

Attendees gained insight into drill design, session structure, and the key elements required to build and sustain a high-performance environment.

Devlyn was delighted with the results of the initiative.

“The week showcased WA Football’s commitment to investing in coach development and strengthening our football community at every level.”
