Over the past two years, Telstra in partnership with the AFL have been providing grassroots community football clubs with grants to grow and assist volunteer capacity, diversify participation and improve club environments and experiences.
During this time, almost $562,000 in funding has been distributed to 125 community clubs across the state providing much needed resources where they are needed most.
Kununurra Junior Football Association received funding to assist in purchasing a defibrillator for their club. With an ambulance service that is quite often stretched, first aid trained club volunteers now have access to lifesaving equipment.
Manjimup Imperials were able to use the funds to purchase new goal post padding replacing old padding which had deteriorated over time and thus improving player safety.
After successfully increasing girls’ participation in Auskick and launching its first all-girls Auskick program, Bibra Lake Junior Football Club received a Telstra Footy Grant to assist in forming an all-girls team in Year 3/4 junior competition.
Carlisle Football Club held a Pride Cup to educate and spark conversation about LGBTQA+ rights and utilised funding to design and purchase Pride-themed jumpers.
Community football clubs across the state can apply for equipment and initiatives up to $2,000 to grow capacity and participation and up to $20,000 for an electronic scoreboard or behind goal netting.
“Telstra Footy Grants have proven to be a great avenue for clubs to receive some financial assistance to support club improvement projects, assist in volunteer training and introduce new initiatives,” Brent Sheridan, Country Competitions Manager at Country Football WA, said.
“Clubs have been able to benefit in a wide variety of ways, from electronic scoreboard purchases and behind the goal netting, to the purchase of ice machines and point of sale systems along with covering the costs for volunteer training courses in some cases.
“Telstra Footy Grants continue to be a great assistance and opportunity for clubs.”
