Charlie Feels The Love At Perth

High-profile Perth recruit Charlie Dean has embraced his move to the Demons as the club chases back-to-back Sullivan Logistics WAFL finals appearances in 2026.

Dean’s Demons made a stunning start to the new season with a 65-point win over West Coast last weekend.

The star recruit gathered 14 disposals, including nine marks, to make a solid contribution in his WAFL debut after joining from Collingwood during the off-season.

First impressions upon arriving in WA have been positive for Dean.

“One of the massive reasons I chose Perth was because I fell in love with the story behind the club, meeting many former players and those involved with the club I can see the passion they have,” Dean said.

He’s also noticed the attention the local competition receives.

“I’ve noticed the traction the WAFL gets compared to the VFL, and I’ve felt the love of the Perth fans,” he said.

“In terms of the players across the WAFL there’s a real hunger, whether it’s to get on a list or for team success, there’s a real passion for the club you play for, and I guess that comes from growing up in that region and playing for the club and that’s something I can’t wait to be part of.”

Having not won a flag since 1977, Perth enjoyed its best season this century with an Elimination Final win over East Fremantle, raising expectations of what’s to come this year.

Dean’s arrival strengthens a squad which includes Sandover Medallist Charlie Constable and Geelong premiership midfielder Brandan Parfitt.

“It’s great to feel that energy and that buzz and look we understand there’s some added pressure after the results of previous years, that’s a badge of honour for us and we can’t wait to play with that extra attention,” Dean said.

Dean was courted by state league clubs across the country but declared the reason he chose the Demons was the chance to continue the progress from last year.

“The core reason why I chose Perth is that I know I’m going to love playing footy there.”

The 24 year-old defender played 12 games in four injury-riddled seasons at the Magpies, but he looks back on his time there with fondness.

“I had an amazing experience at Collingwood and am so grateful to have four years there, but it was an up and down journey,” Dean said.

“Missed two years with injuries and was in an out of the team for the last two seasons and it built a lot of resilience.

“The biggest lesson I learnt is I was so grateful to be at a club that had such quality and experience.

“To be around Nick Daicos and Scott Pendlebury was a wonderful experience.”

Moving to WA wasn’t such a daunting experience with former Collingwood teammate and current housemate Finn Macrae joining the Eagles as a rookie during the pre-season.

“Growing up I played a bit of footy with Finn Macrae and then together at Collingwood,” he said.

“I’m really happy he has received another opportunity at West Coast.”

Dean would grasp the chance to receive another chance at AFL level, but for now that’s not the priority.

“I’m not fixated about getting back onto a list but more putting in place the things I can do to get the best out of myself,” Dean revealed.

“I’ve always been a big believer that there’s so many guys around the WAFL, VFL and SANFL that could quickly step up into the AFL.”
