WA Draft prospect George Gale graduated from Scotch College last week and next month he’s poised to take the next step in his football career by joining an AFL club.

Gale is hopeful but uncertain about how the Telstra AFL Draft night will play out for him.

“I don’t know too much yet and recruiter don’t give too much away to be honest, but yes it’s very exciting and I hope it goes well on Draft night,” Gale told 6pr’s Sports Today.

“I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few clubs although I’m probably not in the highest range of draftees where they would say they are picking me.”

Gale did his chances of being picked up no harm with an impressive display at the AFL Draft Combine.

“Going into it I was wary about how I would test but coming out of it I was pretty happy running PB’s in each event,” Gale said.

“My 2km run is my biggest strength and I was solid elsewhere.”

Gale described how a long-term injury inspired his remarkable body transformation.

This year’s AAMI WA Football State 18s Boys co-captain revealed he’s put 15kg in the past couple of years after a freak injury resulting in a broken foot while walking to training in his 16s year.

“I was walking to training and rolled it in a pothole, and it kept me out all year which is lovely,” Gale told the official WAFL podcast Seven Point Play.

This year, Gale has excelled, earning AFL Under-18s All-Australian honours before breaking into Claremont’s League team after the completion of an Alcock Cup-winning campaign with Scotch College.

His reflects fondly on his time in the 18’s program.

“We had a really good group this year and I enjoyed playing with some good mates,” he said.

Gale, the son of former Fremantle and St Kilda player Mark and grandson of Australian golfing great Terry, has paid tribute to his father.

“He’s probably been the biggest support throughout my footy journey,” he said.

“He’s like my personal coach after every game giving me tips and advice and he’s really helped me in those areas over the years.”

Gale grew up supporting the Dockers and has met with Fremantle, along with other clubs, heading into the Draft.

It would be a fairytale Fremantle father-son story if Gale ends up at Cockburn.
