WA wins first game in U16’s Championships

WA kicked off their AFL National Development Championships – U16’s Boys campaign with a five-point win over South Australia at Mineral Resources on Sunday.

WA came out of the blocks early kicking three goals in the first term and were more accurate than SA in front of goals.

WA Coach Mick Glassborow praised his players on their first win.

“Winning at home with family and friends was a great way to start the Championship,” Glassborrow said.

Despite a strong first half the Black Swans allowed SA back into the game, but Glassborow was impressed with his team’s resilience.

“It was a great effort by the boys to find a way to hang on in the end,” Glassborow said.

“We felt we controlled big parts of the game but didn’t take our opportunities and left the door open for a very fit and strong SA side.

“To fight it out like we did was very pleasing and rewarding for all the work the boys have done so far in the program.”

Glassborow has set a standard for the team to follow.

“We pride ourselves on winning the contest and we started strong in the area, so that was pleasing,” he said.

“We played some good team football. We want to be a connected group and play for each other, and we are seeing that already.

Taj Longmuir racked up 29 disposals across half back for WA, while ruckman Kayle Gerreyn had 15 hit-outs and 21 disposals.

“Kalye lead the way in the ruck and took some important marks late in the game, Taj was very creative across half back,” Glassborow said.

“Toby Whan was able to give us some good run and carry and Darcy Montgomery’s tackle efforts were first class.”

The team travels to Queensland to play two games within four days – Victoria Metro (Tuesday 4 July) and Victoria Country (Friday 7 July) next week.

“It’s a good challenge for the boys and something we are looking forward to, recovery will be the key,” Glassborow said.
