Frankland Park WA’s Best for 2022

The Frankland Park Sporting and Community Facility in Hammond Park has been named the state winner of the AFL’s annual Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Awards.

Based in the City of Cockburn, Frankland Park is a $10.5 million-dollar project with five hectares of open space.

There are two senior AFL sized ovals, competition-standard lighting across all ovals, AFL goal posts and a multi-purpose community sporting facility that meets AFL guidelines.

The Ken Gannon Awards recognise the best practice in community football facility development across Australia, along with the people, clubs and other stakeholders driving the best projects.

The development benefits the local community and Hammond Park Football Club, which has seen a surge in members over the past few years.

“Our members grew very quickly since 2019 and we could not accommodate all our members on one oval,” a spokesperson for Hammond Park FC said.

” We now have 2 playing ovals that both have change rooms for both home and away teams.”

“Overall, this facility has enabled us to grow as a club and provide our members with the best that any AFL community club can provide.”

City of Cockburn Recreation Services Manager Dean Burton said the complex would provide significantly more for residents of the city’s southern-most suburb.

“Until now there has only been one AFL-size reserve to cater for the growing needs of the Hammond Park community where the population is expected to double over the next 20 years,” he said.

“This attractive modern facility is also large enough to accommodate regional events and tournaments, which is another wonderful opportunity for our community and the clubs that will call Frankland Park home.”

Later this year the West Australian Football Commission will also be calling for nominations from clubs and local governments for the WAFC Community Football Facility Award. The award aims to promote and celebrate the provision of well positioned, welcoming, accessible, fit for purpose football facilities that support our growing game’s strategic priorities.

Western Australia’s winning project will be nominated for the National AFL Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Awards.

About the AFL Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Awards:

The Ken Gannon Awards recognise best practice facility development across the country.

The awards are assessed by looking at the impact a project has consistent with the AFL’s aim of providing well-positioned, welcoming, fit-for-purpose football facilities that support our growing game’s strategic priorities.

AFL state and territory bodies identify their best community football facilities project of that year according to those criteria, which then places that project in the running for the National Award, pending assessment by the AFL National Facilities Panel in conjunction with Ken Gannon.
