Rise Academy Completes Successful First Season

The WA All Abilities Football Association is delighted with the results of the inaugural season of the Rise Inclusion Academy this year.

The Academy is aimed at footballers with a disability aged 16 years and above, and focusses on leadership and the wellbeing of players.

In September, seventy players from clubs in the Perth Football League Integrated Competition were invited to compete in the Draft Combine, presented by the WA Football AFL Talent Academy, where 40 players were picked to play in three exhibition matches.

In partnership with Rise Network, the Academy also provided a unique opportunity for players with disabilities to represent WA at the AFL Inclusion Carnival in Adelaide last month.

John Stone, Rise All Abilities Inclusion Academy Coach, has witnessed the benefits of the program.

“I’ve seen so many of the players grow, in different aspects, whether its friendships, ability to play or ability to connect,” he said.

The feedback from players was overwhelmingly positive.

Reece McIntyre from North Beach said the Academy was an eye-opener.

“It was tough training, but the hard work paid off in the end,” he said.

Swan Districts midfielder Dylan Farrow was proud to be selected.

“It’s been amazing and a great privilege to represent the Academy squad.

Just learning new skills, new teammates and getting along with everyone,” Dylan said.

Executive Officer WA All Abilities Football Association Hayden Marchetto has put out the call to those interested in being part of the WA All Abilities Football Association.

“If you want to play, we’ll find a way.”
