The West Australian Football Commission is delighted that four local players have been selected in the first round of the 2021 NAB AFL National Draft.

Jye Amiss (pick 8- Fremantle), Neil Erasmus (pick 10- Fremantle), Angus Sheldrick (pick 18- Sydney) and Jacob van Rooyen (pick 19- Melbourne) are joining the AFL system after excelling in the state’s Talent Development Pathway system.

WAFC Head of Coaching Marc Webb is excited about the future.

East Perth’s Jye Amiss is coming off a superb season as a key forward with the Royals in the Simply Energy Colts competition.

“Jye had an outstanding year as a forward, with his goalkicking accuracy complimenting his ability to lead into good positions and beat his direct opponent,” Webb said.

Amiss, who kicked 51 goals in the Colts season, including 38.12 from set shots, spent much of the year travelling from Busselton to the city to fulfil his football commitments.

Webb loves the competitive style of Neil Erasmus, who played Colts with Subiaco in 2021, along with his PSA commitments.

“Neil’s a hard-working half forward with strong hands, he’s great overhead and can also kick a goal.

Erasmus continued his development as a future AFL player this year, averaging 28 disposals a game with the Lions.

“It’s going to be exciting to see what the pair can do at Fremantle.” Webb said.

Picked later in the first round a pair of Tigers were selected with back to back picks at 18 (Sydney) and 19 (Melbourne).

Webb was impressed by Angus’ ball winning ability, courage, leadership and consistency through the year. With Webb adding that Jacob’s contested marking, versatility and work ethic is second to none.

The work of Webb, Adam Jones, the WAFC Talent team and its coaches has played a significant role in developing these exciting young players into AFL Draftees.

The journey for these talented young players has just begun.

Day two begins Thursday at 4:00pm AWST on Fox Footy or through afl.com.au
