State Talent and Draft"
The initial intake of players for the 2019 Simply Energy WA State Academy has been announced ahead of the AFL National 16s and 18s Championships in June and July this year.
This first intake includes 36 players in the 16s age group and 40 in the 18s age group. Both squads can be added to from the WAFL Futures and Simply Energy Colts competitions, while Train On players may also be elevated to the main squad.
WA State Talent Manager Adam Jones congratulated all of the players on their selection and said he was looking forward to working with Western Australia’s most talented young players throughout the program.
“We are committed to delivering an academy program that provides each athlete with both football and personal development opportunities to realise their full potential and become leaders of the future,” he said.
“The Academy has a strong commitment to developing players both on and off the field, with a focus on conducting leadership, nutrition and education sessions in addition to football skills to enhance their overall development.”
The State 18s schedule includes trial games against East Perth and Swan Districts Football Club, while the State 16s will face South Fremantle and Swan Districts Colts ahead of their National Carnival.
Peter Sumich will lead the 18s for a third-consecutive year, with Ben Dyer taking the reins of the 16s for the first time.
