WAFL"
The WA State 16s team donned odd socks during their trial match against the WA Amateur Football League State Colts at Subiaco Oval last Firday night to raise awareness and funds for sarcoma research.
This initiative was part of a wider football community effort between the West Perth, Claremont and Subiaco football districts.
Last year the football community managed to raise more than $100,000 which bumped the total amount of money raised over the last four years to more than $30 million.
WA Football has a reason close to home to be involved. WA State 16s player Logan Foley’s younger brother Kalin lost his battle to rare soft tissue paediatric sarcoma at the age of 15. Kalin had played for Wanneroo JFC.
The causes of sarcoma, including whether there are any underlying genetic links, are not yet established. This is the reason why more research into the molecular biology and etiology is so crucial.
Football clubs and teams across Perth’s north were encouraged to join and support the event by wearing odd socks last Friday, Saturday and Sunday with local players asked to donate a gold coin.
