Football participants across Western Australia are urged to nominate volunteers for the 2019 WA Football Volunteer of the Year Awards.

Nominations for the 2019 awards open today, Monday, May 20 to coincide with the beginning of National Volunteer Week and recognise the hard work and commitment of WA’s football volunteers.

Awards will be presented in the following award categories by the West Australian Football Commission in conjunction with the AFL:

– Optus WA Football Volunteer of the Year

– NAB AFL Auskick Volunteer

– AFL Diversity Ambassador

– AFL Primary School Ambassador

– AFL Secondary School Ambassador

– AFL All Abilities Volunteer

– Go for 2&5 AFL Junior Coach of the Year

– Senior Coach of the Year

The Optus WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award, supported by The Sunday Times, is the major award for a volunteer who makes an outstanding overall contribution to WA Football.

Finalists for the Optus WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award will be invited to attend the 2019 WAFL Sandover Medal Count, where the overall winner will be announced and receive a trip for two to the 2019 AFL Grand Final, including flights and accommodation.

Last year, Mark Brookes from the South Fremantle District was announced as the overall winner from more than 1,200 nominees for his contribution to junior football over 15 years.

West Australian Football Commission Executive Manager – Youth, Community & Game Development, Troy Kirkham, thanked all of WA Football’s dedicated volunteers and encouraged football clubs and schools across Western Australia to submit nominations.

“Volunteers play a crucial role at all levels of football and it’s really important they receive the recognition they deserve,” he said.

“If there’s a volunteer at your club or school who has been making a difference, please take the time to put their name forward and acknowledge their efforts.”
