The WA Country Football League in conjunction with Nutrien Ag Solutions has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Nutrien Ag Country Football Championships (formerly Landmark Country Football Championships) as a result of the circumstances surrounding the Covid-19 crisis and current restrictions placed on all levels of football around Australia. The cancellation extends to the CBH Group Colts Championships and the Women’s Country Football Championships which were all due to be held in July.

Whilst all football is currently postponed until May 31, the WACFL believes it is in the best interest of leagues and clubs to cancel the 2020 Championships to help leagues reduce costs as well as provide adequate flexibility of fixturing in preparation for the season to recommence post May 31.

“The Country Championships has been a part of our football landscape for over 50 years and Nutrien Ag Solution has been on that journey for 47 of those” Tom Bottrell, WAFC Executive Manager Country Football & Facilities said.

“We are obviously disappointed that the 2020 Nutrien Ag Country Championship won’t go ahead, however, it is very important that we continue to put the health and well-being of our community and sustainability of our leagues and clubs at the forefront of every decision.”

Nutrien Ag Solutions Regional Manager – West, Andrew Duperouzel stated: “We are so proud as a company to have supported WA Country Football for almost five decades, because we know the vital role footy plays in our rural and regional communities. But we are facing an unprecedented crisis with the spread of the coronavirus, and the health and safety of everyone involved in football and the communities we play in must come first. Many of our employees and customers are involved in country football and we feel for everyone involved in this really tough decision.”

In making the decision, in conjunction with commercial partners, the WACFL will work closely with the WAFC to look at further cost saving measures and identify opportunities to support leagues and clubs through these uncharted waters.
