State 16 Boys Secure First Win of ChampionshipsWednesday, July 10, 2024 - 10:34 AM

WA has produced its best performance at the 2024 Marsh AFL National Development Championships-U16 Boys.

Playing their second game of the Championships, WA overcame a quarter time deficit to beat Victoria Country by 27 points 13.9 (87) to 9.6 (60) to record their first win.

WAFC State Talent Manager Adam Jones was proud of the character shown by the group after suffering a first-up defeat against South Australia.

“Vic Country started really strongly but after half time we executed our plans really well,” Jones said.

“Being strong at the contest, winning clearances and sticking our tackles was a focus and the boys did an exceptional job on that front.”

Captain for the day Lucas Robinson was best on ground with 25 disposals, his eight clearances helping WA gain territory.

Fellow midfielder Leo Steed also had an impact with 23 disposals, while small forward Lachie McGlade bobbed up with three goals as WA booted six goals to three after half time.

“Being the group’s second road trip of the Championships, the coaching group led by Mick Glassborow was impressed by the attitude of the players,” Jones said.

“They are a close-knit squad who have bonded and that shows out on the ground.”

WA plays Vic Metro at Southport on the Gold Coast on Friday morning.
