Four new inductees into the WA Football Hall of Fame have a strong connection with Fremantle.
Stan Magro, Tony Buhagiar, Dale Kickett and Aaron Sandilands all represented Fremantle clubs and the quartet will join an elite group of football identities in this year’s Hall of Fame.
Stan Magro’s career began at South Fremantle in 1970, before moving to Collingwood in 1977.
He also spent two years with East Perth in the 1980’s.
During his 229 matches Magro was regarded as a tough, skilful centreman who later became a back pocket specialist.
A stand-out schoolboy footballer, Magro completed a distinguished 15-year senior career in WA and Victoria, representing both states.
He also served 11 years as a senior coach.
Tony Buhagiar was a rover blessed with speed and a good goal sense during his 14-year senior career.
Starting at East Fremantle in 1973, he went on to play with Essendon and Footscray in the VFL, also representing WA during the early years of State of Origin.
Through 251 matches, Buhagiar kicked 462 goals and played in two Premierships with Old Easts in 1974 and 1979.
Dale Kickett was one of the most travelled footballers in the 1990’s.
After beginning with Claremont in 1988, he played for no less than five clubs from 1990 until 2002.
He finished with 266 games, including 82 at the Tigers in the WAFL ,15 with Fitzroy, two with the West Coast Eagles, 21 at St Kilda, eight at Essendon,135 with the Fremantle Dockers and three games for WA.
A triple Premiership winner with Claremont, Kickett was a courageous and inspirational match winner, who turned into a dashing half back flanker and a fan favourite at the Dockers.
As well as winning the Doig Medal (Fremantle Club Champion) in 1997, he was also included in the Fremantle 25 since 1995, a team of the best Dockers to have represented the club.
The Fremantle theme is rounded out by Aaron Sandilands.
A giant ruckman, Sandilands played 293 senior games, 271 of those at the Dockers between 2003-2019, while he notched up 22 matches with East Fremantle.
Sandilands was a four-time All Australian, a two-time Doig Medallist, a two-time Glendinning Medallist and was also part of the Fremantle 25 since 1995 champion team.
Sandilands is one of the most decorated players to wear Fremantle colours and as the equal tallest player in VFL/AFL history, he displayed remarkable agility and football smarts.
The West Australian Football Commission congratulates four greats of WA football who will be inducted into the WA Football Hall of Fame on Sandover Medal night next month.
