Seven West Australians have been named to take part in the 2024 Marsh AFL National Futures-Boy Program match as part of the biggest day on the Australian football calendar.
Claremont duo Charlie Banfield and Cody Curtin will be joined by Perth’s Koby Evans, Blake Kelly from Swan Districts, Subiaco’s Wes Walley and South Fremantle pair Fred Rodriguez and Toby Whan in the 46-player squad.
The exhibition match will take place on AFL Grand Final Day at the MCG on Saturday, 28th September.
The group of players will form two sides, with every state and territory represented.
Marc Webb, State Talent Coach - Male Pathways at the West Australian Football Commission has congratulated the players selected.
“To be selected for this game is recognition of the talent the boys have displayed this year. It will be a fantastic experience for them, getting to run out of the MCG on Grand Final day and then getting to watch the AFL Grand Final.
WA Players selected:
Charlie Banfield – Hard running wingman who can go forward and kick a goal. He played in four AFL National Championship games.
Cody Curtin – Is a key forward/back. Started the colts and AFL National Championships as a key defender with his roll off marking and offensive run. Has moved forward at the backend of the year, kicking 12 goals in his last two games of colts.
Koby Evans – West Coast Eagles Next Generation Academy. Is a powerful medium forward/midfielder that is strong in the contest and chase-down tackling pressure. He played in three AFL National Championship games.
Blake Kelly – Is a versatile inside midfielder/forward. He played the first three games of the AFL National Championships. Blake is a clean and tough clearance player and has theability to go forward and kick a goal.
Fred Rodriguez – Played in every AFL National Championships game as an inside midfielder. He has a very good work rate, strong skill and decision making. He made the 2024 Colts Team of the Year.
Wes Walley – West Coast Eagles Next Generation Academy. He is a quick and skilful forward who can take an aerial mark and also can kick goals. He played in the last AFL National Championship game, kicking two goals against Victoria Country.
Toby Whan – Fremantle Football Club Next Generation Academy. Is a versatile inside midfielder who has a very good work rate and can win the ball both on the inside and in space. He played the last game against Victoria Country.
