The Wheatbelt town of Dowerin was the centre of the football world over the weekend, as AFL legend Lance Franklin made a remarkable return to his junior club for Round 1 of the Mortlock Football League — delivering an unforgettable day for country football.

More than 3,500 spectators packed the oval, an extraordinary turnout for a town of fewer than 400 people, highlighting the pulling power of one of the game’s greats and the deep connection between country football and its communities.

Franklin, pulling on the Dowerin jumper once again, kicked a goal in the Tigers’ opening round clash against Gingin, but the result on the scoreboard was secondary to the overwhelming success of the event itself.

The match formed the centrepiece of a major fundraising effort for the Dowerin Football Club’s lighting project — with the day exceeding expectations, raising more than $200,000 towards the club’s goal. The upgrade will play a critical role in supporting night training, extended use of facilities and the long-term sustainability of the club.

Dowerin Football Club President Todd Quartermaine said the event was a defining moment for the club, built on months of planning and the commitment of volunteers.

“This event has been months in the making and to see it come together the way it did is incredibly special,” Quartermaine said.

“The support from our country, sponsors and volunteers has been unbelievable. It shows what can be achieved when everyone gets behind something bigger than themselves.”

“For our club, this isn’t just about one day — it’s about creating opportunities for the future. The lighting project will make a real difference for our players, our members and the broader community who use our facilities.”

The success of the day extended beyond fundraising, providing a rare opportunity to showcase country football on a major stage and strengthen connections across the Mortlock Football League.

Mortlock Football League President Wes Hagboom said the event highlighted the role local clubs play in driving community outcomes.

“Days like this show exactly why country football is so important,” Hagboom said.

“It’s about bringing people together, creating memories and strengthening communities. The work that Dowerin Football Club has put into this event has been outstanding and is a credit to everyone involved.”

“Events like this don’t just happen — they are driven by passionate volunteers and strong clubs who are willing to put in the time and effort for their community.”

From packed boundary lines to a town buzzing with excitement, the Round 1 clash in Dowerin delivered more than just a game of football — it showcased the power of community, the pride of regional clubs and the lasting impact of giving back.

Led by the tireless efforts of the Dowerin Football Club, whose volunteers drove months of planning and execution, the event stands as a testament to what can be achieved at club level. In a single afternoon, Dowerin not only celebrated its past but invested in its future — creating a legacy moment that will be remembered across the community for years to come.
