Good Evans! Souths teen becomes latest AFLW signing

South Fremantle teenager Madi Evans has become the latest ATCO WAFLW talent snapped up by an AFLW club.

The 19-year-old has this week signed with AFLW powerhouse Brisbane Lions as a replacement player.

The talented intercept-marking defender is enjoying a career-best WAFLW season after crossing from East Fremantle to South Fremantle during the off-season, averaging 15.2 disposals and 3.5 marks per game.

Lions coach Craig Starcevich was excited to bring in a player of Evans’ quality as an injury replacement and predicts her to play a variety of positions at AFLW level.

“Formerly a talented netballer, Madi is an athletic intercepting half back at the moment but, with her run and overhead marking, we think she could play wing or half forward also,” Starcevich told the club website.

“She’ll return home this weekend to farewell her South Fremantle teammates, and we look forward to having her back full time from next week.”

Evans has already got a taste of training at AFLW level, spending three days this week training with the Lions squad before returning home to break the news to her South Fremantle teammates.

“The sessions this week were hard but a lot of fun, it made me really excited for what could be,” Evans said.

“To come into such an incredible team who have recently won a premiership, you know the girls are experienced, so I’m excited to learn from them.”

Evans joins her former South Fremantle teammate Natasha Entwistle (West Coast), Perth forward Poppy Stockwell (Hawthorn) and Claremont ball magnet Juliet Kelly (Adelaide) in being added to AFLW lists as replacement players this off-season in a coup for the WAFLW competition.
