WAFLW Preliminary Final Preview

EVERYTHING goes on the line for Peel Thunder and East Fremantle in Mandurah on Sunday with a Grand Final spot in the WAFL Women’s competition up for grabs against Subiaco.

It has been an exciting Optus WAFL Women’s Premiership Season over the seven rounds and then first week of the finals series, and now are down to three teams left and by Sunday night, we’ll know who will be playing off in the Grand Final.

Subiaco advanced to the Grand Final with a tight win against Peel last Sunday while East Fremantle moved through to the preliminary final against the Thunder this Sunday at David Grays Arena.

The winner of the preliminary final on Sunday will advance to the Grand Final next week which will be held at Joondalup’s Provident Financial Oval.

OPTUS WAFLW SEMI FINALS WRAP

Peel finished the home and away season in the WAFL Women’s competition in second position on the ladder and that was a tremendous result coming off the wooden spoon the previous year in the inaugural WAFLW season.

They then only lost to Subiaco in the second semi-final last Sunday at Leederville Oval by a goal in the rain, but the Thunder have earned a second chance and now will host the preliminary final this Sunday with a chance to move into the Grand Final.

East Fremantle won the inaugural WAFLW premiership last year and after a bit of a slow start to the 2020 season, the Sharks did well to beat Swan Districts in the final game of the home and away season to end up finishing in third spot.

That saw them earn the right to host the first semi-final and they’d go on to win that by a goal to advance to the preliminary final and to remain a chance of winning a back-to-back premiership.

The two teams first met during the 2020 WAFLW season back in Round 3 at David Grays Arena and that saw Peel come away with a 13-point victory over East Fremantle.

That was their only time playing another during the season so Peel will take heart from that performance of beating the reigning WAFLW premiers.

Meanwhile in the WAFLW Reserves competition, Claremont takes on West Perth also on Sunday with a spot in the Grand Final against East Fremantle up for grabs.

And then in the Youth Girls Rogers Cup preliminary final, Peel Thunder will play Claremont with a Grand Final berth against South Fremantle the reward for the victor.
