Swan Districts’ player, Wayde Twomey was awarded the prestigious Simpson Medal following WA’s stunning victory over Victoria in the State Game on 11 May.

The victory ended a two-decade winning drought for the WA team, the Black Swans, which is selected from the best players across the WAFL competition.

Twomey was WA’s best player on the ground, with a dynamic performance that included kicking 5 goals from 16 possessions and 6 marks.

The State Game, played in Northam, was a fierce contest between the Black Swans and Victoria’s Big V, with each side putting in a tough performance that reflected the decades old rivalry between the two powerhouse football states. The taste of victory was sweet for WA, which defeated the Big V 17.16 (118) to 15.11 (101) for the first time since 1991.

Other stand out performers from the match included East Fremantle’s Steven Dodd who received the Sports Minister award named after the Hon Terry Waldron MLA, the Tuck Waldron Award presented by the Hon Mia Davies MLC – Member for Central Wheatbelt.

Victorian player, Chris Cain from Port Melbourne, was named Victoria’s best on field, receiving the Frank Johnson Medal for his hard-working 32-possessions.

The State Game is played annually between WA and an interstate team.
