Bachar Houli Foundation wins Cultural Inclusion Award

The Bachar Houli Foundation (BHF) has once again proven its commitment to diversity and inclusion by winning a prestigious award at the inaugural Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA Diversity and Inclusion Awards.

Held at Crown Perth on July 19th, the awards gala celebrated the exceptional contributions of Western Australian businesses and organisations in creating a more inclusive society.

The Bachar Houli Foundation won its nomination in the Cultural Inclusion Award: Sponsored by the Western Australian Department of Communities category and stood out among more than 120 initiatives nominated across 11 categories.

The West Australian Football Commission’s Multicultural Officer Pinar Komur said winning the award highlights the Foundation’s extraordinary efforts in reaching multicultural communities and promoting Australian Rules Football (AFL) among those who might not have otherwise engaged with the sport.

“Winning this award underscores our commitment to creating a football community where everyone feels welcomed and valued,” Komur said.

“It validates our efforts and inspires us to continue to push boundaries in promoting diversity and we encourage all young aspiring footballers to take part and be a part of this inclusive community.”

Founded by former AFL player Bachar Houli, the Foundation aims to create a more inclusive environment by breaking down barriers and providing opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate in AFL.

Through its programs, the Foundation not only nurtures athletic talent but also instills values of teamwork, leadership, and cultural understanding.

One of the Foundation’s flagship programs is the Bachar Houli Cup, an inter-school competition that encourages students from Islamic schools to participate in AFL.

This initiative has been instrumental in bridging cultural gaps and fostering a sense of

belonging among young people.

Another significant effort is the Bachar Houli Academy, which provides elite training and development opportunities for young Muslim athletes, helping them to pursue their dreams in professional sports.

“For kids looking to get involved, there are several upcoming programs like the Bachar Houli Cup for Primary and Secondary students,” Pinar explained.
