Major honour for Stephen Michael at Western Australian of the Year Awards

South Fremantle champion and proud Noongar man Stephen Michael has been recognised for his monumental contribution to footy with the Channel 7 Sports Award at the Western Australian of the Year Awards this week.

Michael, an Australian Football Hall of Fame and the WA Football Hall of Fame member, edged out Australian cricket star Alana King and dual Olympic gold medal-winning sailor Matthew Wearn OAM for the prestigious honour.

Michael enjoyed a decorated playing career including a WAFL premiership with the Bulldogs in 1980 among his 243 games, consecutive Sandover Medals in 1980 & 1981, All-Australian captaincy and was selection in the Indigenous Team of the Century.

And Michael’s impact extends well beyond his playing career.

These days he’s running the Stephen Michael Foundation, supporting sport, education and wellbeing programs across WA’s South West, Mid West and Gascoyne and Murchison regions, with more than 5000 children across more than 40 schools benefitting from its work.
