First AFL Coaching Masterclass is a Success

The first AFL coaching masterclass for the season was a huge success, with more than 50 community coaches attending the session, hosted by the Fremantle Dockers.

The partnership between the WAFC Coaching department and AFL clubs, Fremantle and West Coast, has led to a series of coaching masterclass sessions that will be rolled out in the coming months covering a range of topics for junior and youth community coaches.

This week, the first coaching masterclass was led by Fremantle AFLW and Community Coaching Director, Cam Shepherd and development coach Adam Read, with a key emphasis on creating a quality experience for junior players and providing optimal learning environments at training.

Shepherd outlined the key messages for coaching young people and providing feedback, before Read led the coaches through a practical session on the ground.

Coaches were shown how to incorporate decision-making training drills alongside running small-sided games, which still create the element of fun for the players.

WAFC Community Coaching Specialist, Tim Edmunds believes the number of coaches attending the masterclass series will continue to rise due to the high calibre of AFL coaches running these sessions.

“The first coaching session was a huge success, the massive number of coaches attending and wanting to learn is a great sign moving forward,” Edmunds said.

“It was great to see a number of club coach coordinators attend the session as they play a key role in helping to develop the coaches at their club.”

West Coast’s first session will be held next week on Monday 29 May.
